EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Share the Road Similar Programs Study was conducted to determine the type of Share the Road information that is provided by Federal and non-federal organizations. The focus of this effort was to determine if other organizations have a Share the Road public outreach program similar to the Federal Highway Administration's No-Zone Campaign.
An important factor that was considered in reviewing other organizations' Share the Road programs was whether the program specifically addressed the safety concerns of passenger and commercial vehicles sharing the road. Principle among these concerns included information about a commercial vehicle's blind spots, stopping distance requirements, turning requirements, and overall limitations.
Of the 350 organizations that responded to the study, 19 organizations were identified as actual similar Share the Road programs. Information obtained from these organizations indicated that the majority of these programs:
- Primarily use brochures or booklets for their outreach efforts
- Target adult drivers
- Focus their outreach materials on education about driving near trucks (with little emphasis on other commercial vehicles).
- Promote their outreach messages within state boundaries
In addition, most of these identified similar Share the Road programs do not:
- Target seniors or children
- Mention buses as a "share the road" commercial vehicle
- Target truck or commercial vehicle drivers in their outreach efforts
- Have a national outreach program.
Highlights of the study's other findings include:
- Over one-half of the responding organizations are already participating in an established Share the Road program or the No-Zone Campaign.
- About one-fourth of the responding organizations are not involved with a Share the Road program but are interested in becoming involved.
- Over one-third of the responding organizations currently use the No-Zone Campaign in their outreach efforts.
- Over 50 organizations requested additional information about the No-Zone Campaign.
About one-half of the 51 state Department of Motor Vehicles mention the term "share the road" in their driver manuals.
